This makes me want to puke, and I have no idea how I didn't hear about this before now:

Seriously? SERIOUSLY???

but. the u.s. already has and enforces the sorts of laws written here. in fact they are built into its law system. this video completely ignores that fact. by not signing this declaration the u.s. isn't condoning the harassment and murder of LGBT people, nor is it denying us the right to feel safe. that kind of safety can only come when a society is accepting. and there is nothing you can do to change peoples' minds but educate them and make them aware of the LGBT community's situation. i really don't see the big deal. in this case all that happened was the u.s. didn't sign a symbolic declaration. i mean, i definitely agree with the "A" bullet point: go to the DOMA protests and fight for the right to marriage, but at least be fair about it. we aren't being totally ignored by our country, it's just taking it a loooong ass time for it to get with the picture.
so..that's my problem with the video.
also. their quotation marks were in the wrong place in that slide showing the u.s.'s given reason for not signing. so there.

I get your point, and I guess I did kind of jump to conclusions when watching this. I do want to figure out why the U.S. didn't sign it, however. If it's only symbolic, there would be no reason for our country not to sign it, right? It would make the GLBT community happy, and they wouldn't even be enforcing any new laws. I mean, obviously the US isn't condoning manslaughter by any standards, but we also can't pretend that there isn't discrimination based on sexuality when it comes to employment. There aren't sexuality or gender identity anti-discrimination laws in even half the states yet, so I guess that's why this bothers me so much. I'm going to look into it more and really find out why the U.S. didn't sign that declaration. I sure hope there's something in there that this video didn't mention, otherwise I see no reason why we shouldn't have signed it.

well, hopefully the un representative isn't just signing things to make people happy. signing this would mean the u.s. stood behind what it stands for 100%. and they don't, which is i suppose the point this video's trying to get at in a roundabout way. i just wish hrc could say it better. it's too easy to take a fact loosely related to civil rights for lgbt people and make a video about it. it kind of feels exploitative, actually.

ALSO it can be really dangerous to sign something and say you back it if the language is vague. i have no idea whether or not that was the case here, but it's a totally legitimate reason, because a lot of corrupt and messy stuff can happen.

ok. time to move on. it was fun to play "dispute the video". let's do it again sometime!

The Christian-right hates the U.N. Just look what ass-Bush did: named our representative specifically because of his HATRED for the U.N. Bush did that with just about every agency, too, put an a-hole in charge who was actively working AGAINST the stated goals of said agency. Man, I hope they DO appont a Special Prosecutor who reams the shit out of Bush & Co. for their actions towards wrecking this country.

Honestly can't say why people are so anti-GLBT. They use their religious beliefs as an excuse for their fear and bigotry. Makes ya want to snatch them baldheaded!
